It includes several specialties (majors), each offering a more targeted field of application and expertise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mastermas.univ-lyon1.fr\/index.php\/mathematiques-pour-lingenierie-de-la-simulation\/\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/mastermas.univ-lyon1.fr\/index.php\/major-mathematics-biology-and-medecine\/\">Mathematics, Biology, and Medicine<\/a> (Lyon)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mastermas.univ-lyon1.fr\/index.php\/mathematiques-pour-lingenierie-de-la-simulation\/\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/mastermas.univ-lyon1.fr\/index.php\/major-mathematics-envrionment-and-climate\/\">Mathematics, Environment, and Climate<\/a> (Lyon)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mastermas.univ-lyon1.fr\/index.php\/mathematiques-pour-lingenierie-de-la-simulation\/\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/mastermas.univ-lyon1.fr\/index.php\/major-mathematics-image-data\/\">Mathematics, Images, Data<\/a> (Lyon)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mastermas.univ-lyon1.fr\/index.php\/mathematiques-pour-lingenierie-de-la-simulation\/\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/mastermas.univ-lyon1.fr\/index.php\/major-mathematics-statistical-and-machine-learning\/\">Mathematics, Statistical Learning, and Machine Learning<\/a> (Lyon)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mines-stetienne.fr\/formation\/master-maths-action-mea\/\">Mathematics for Machine Learning and Engineering Sciences<\/a> (Saint-\u00c9tienne)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In each of these specialties, several branches of mathematics are taught: analysis, statistics, probability, deterministic or stochastic modeling, numerical modeling, and scientific computing. Very few programs in France offer this combination, and the teaching staff is highly committed to fostering interactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each course switches to English as soon as a non French speaking student attends it.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Training program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first semester (from September to December) consists of a <a href=\"https:\/\/mastermas.univ-lyon1.fr\/index.php\/curriculum-core\">core curriculum<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Refresher courses in analysis, statistics, and programming (no-credit but mandatory courses)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deterministic modeling &#8211; 6 ECTS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stochastic modeling and statistical learning &#8211; 6 ECTS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optimisation and machine learning &#8211; 6 ECTS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientific English &#8211; 3 ECTS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The second semester (January to March) is structured differently depending on the enrollment location for the M2 <em>Maths en Action<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>In Lyon<\/strong>, students choose a major (4 courses) and two additional courses from other majors. Each course is worth 3 ECTS. See the table below for the list of available courses. Exceptionally, the two additional courses may be taken within a &lsquo;partner&rsquo; master\u2019s program (such as the M2 <em>Math\u00e9matiques Avanc\u00e9es<\/em>), subject to approval by the teaching staff.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In Saint-\u00c9tienne<\/strong>, the three second-semester courses (each worth 6 ECTS) are mandatory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The final-year internship (April to September) is worth 21 ECTS, it serves as an introduction to research professions and can be carried out in a research institute or a company&rsquo;s R&amp;D department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Major<strong> Mathematics, Biology, and Medicine<\/strong> (Lyon)<br> &#8211; Epidemiology<br> &#8211; Theoretical evolutionary biology<br> &#8211; Cellular dynamics and complex systems<br> &#8211; Modelling in spatial ecology<br><br><br><\/td><td>Major<strong> Mathematics, Environment, and Climate<\/strong> (Lyon)<br> &#8211; Modelling of risk assessment and climate change<br> &#8211; Equations of fluid mechanics and their numerical approximations <br> &#8211; Modelling in spatial ecology<br> &#8211; Graphs and ecological networks<br><br><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Major<strong> Mathematics, Images, Data<\/strong> (Lyon)<br> &#8211; Geometric approaches for images and shapes. <br> &#8211; Variational methods for inverse problems in medical imaging. <br> &#8211; Sparsity and high dimension<br> &#8211; Neural networks<br><\/td><td>Major<strong> Mathematics, Statistical Learning, and Machine Learning<\/strong> (Lyon)<br> &#8211; Neural networks<br> &#8211; Sparsity and high dimension<br> &#8211; Graphs and ecological networks<br> &#8211; Optimal transport for statistical learning<br><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Major<strong> Mathematics and machine learning for engineering<\/strong> (Saint-\u00c9tienne)<br> &#8211; High-Performance Computing and Numerical Simulation (6 ECTS)<br>&#8211; Meta-Models and Global Optimization (6 ECTS)<br>&#8211; Advanced Statistical Modeling (6 ECTS)<\/td><td><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Admission<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This program is open to students who have successfully completed the first year of a master&rsquo;s degree in mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applications to enroll in the M2 program in Lyon must be submitted via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ecandidat.univ-lyon1.fr\/\">eCandidat Lyon 1<\/a>.<br>Applications to enroll in the M2 program in Saint-\u00c9tienne must be submitted via <a href=\"https:\/\/ecandidat.univ-lyon1.fr\/\">eCandidat Saint-\u00c9tienne<\/a>.<br>Note that some foreign students may be concerned by the Campus France <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusfrance.org\/en\">&lsquo;Study in France&rsquo;<\/a> procedure (in which case, pay attention to the early deadline).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Application submission: <strong>May 11-June 26, 2026<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Admission results: <strong>July 7, 2026<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deadline to accept or decline the offer: <strong>July 22, 2026<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Maths in Action<\/strong> is eligible for <a href=\"https:\/\/graduate-plus.fr\/en\/mathematics-foundations-of-computer-science-and-interactions-2\/2025-master-excellence-scholarships-mathinfi\/\">MATHINFI Graduate Programme&rsquo;s excellence scholarships<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The master program<em><strong> Maths en action<\/strong><\/em> is co-accredited with the following institutions: <a href=\"http:\/\/option-md.ec-lyon.fr\/MIR.php?item=Masters\">Ecole Centrale de Lyon<\/a>, l\u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ens-lyon.fr\/\">Ecole Normale Sup\u00e9rieure de Lyon,<\/a>&nbsp;l\u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mines-stetienne.fr\/\">Ecole des Mines de Saint-Etienne<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.univ-st-etienne.fr\/fr\/index.html\">Universit\u00e9 Jean-Monnet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/polytech.univ-lyon1.fr\/\">Polytech Lyon<\/a> is also a partner of this program. <br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The M2&nbsp;\u00ab\u00a0Maths in action : from concept to innovation\u00a0\u00bb&nbsp; aims at providing a strong education in research, with a close link with applications.
